Good Sports

Good Sports mission is to increase youth participation in sports, fitness, and recreational programs by targeting one of major obstacles limiting participation-access to sports equipment. Good Sports distributes sports equipment, footwear, and apparel to community organizations offering programs to disadvantaged youth helping to lay the foundation for healthy, active lifestyles. To accomplish this, Good Sports partners with sporting goods manufacturers to ensure that disadvantaged youth are getting the equipment they need to participate. Mudville Baseball Club vs. Boston Colonials
Saturday, May 10th at 1pm

The year 2008 is an important year in the history of Boston sports, as it represents the 150th anniversary of the organized baseball in the region. On Saturday, May 10th, the Mudville Baseball Club of Holliston and the Boston Colonials are scheduled to mark this anniversary with a “Massachusetts Rules” game at Boston Commons at 1:00pm. The Mudville Baseball Club and the Boston Colonials are vintage baseball teams that have been active in the local are for many years. Their love for the game and adherence to the rules and nuances of the game as it existed in the 19th century, make them the ideal candidates to participate in this celebration. Child Identification Program & Craft Fair
Saturday, May 17th from 10am-4pm

On Saturday, May 17th, the Middlesex Lodge in Framingham will be hosting their Annual Child Identification Program and Craft Fair from 10:00am-4:00pm at Framingham Masonic Building, located at 404 Concord Street. This event is free to all who wish to participate. Every child will receive an Identification Kit consisting of: Fingerpring/Dental Records, DNA Swab, and brief videotaped interview. Parents can keep these kits stored safetly. In the most unfortunate case of their child being missing, these kits when given to local authorities will help return that child home swiftly. Local crafters will also be featured alongside this event as well as food and refreshments.

Luis Tiant Swing for Diabetes Golf Tournament
Monday, May 19th at 1pm
 
On Monday, May 19th, the American Diabetes Association will host the Luis Tiant Swing for Diabetes Golf Tournament, which will be held at the Granite Links Golf Club in Quincy. This annual event offers golfers an opportunity to “chip” in the fight against diabetes. Teams of enthusiastic golfers will tee-off with a celebrity in the scramble format tournament at 1:00pm followed by a cocktail reception ceremony for Luis Tiant, former Red Sox pitching legend who has diabetes. For more information on the golf tournament, call Jessica Gurman 617-482-4580, ext. 3502 or email jgurman@diabetes.org. Several past and present sports celebrities and legends will be on the fairway with Tiant to “chip” in for the fight against diabetes. Some of the Red Sox alumni and sports legends who will be golfing include Lou Merloni, Lyndon Byers, Max Lane, Jim Corsi, Jerry Moses, Bob Montgomery, Jim Lonborg, Dick Berardino, Bill Monbouquette, Ken Hodge, Pie McKenzie, Lyndon Byers, Dick McAuliffe, and Wilbur Wood. The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society's 13th Annual Strut for Strays

Sunday, June 8th at 11am

The Merrimack River Feline Rescue Society’s 13th Annual Strut for Strays to be held on June 8th, 2008 at 11am. It is a three-mile walk will feature Randy Price as the honorary chairman, great music by Sunchunk, food, children’s games and activities including face painting and much more. Leashed dogs are welcome and water stations will be available along the walk route. "Strutters" collecting at least $50 in pledges will be given a Strut for Strays t-shirt. Proceeds will benefit homeless cats and kittens and support MRFRS’s programs caring for cats and kittens in need in the community. Event takes place rain or shine at the Bartlet Mall, at the intersection of Pond and High Street in Newburyport. MRFRS is a nationally recognized, non-profit volunteer organization committed to ensuring the health and welfare of feral and domestic cats and kittens. Bob Dinges Findraiser
Friday, June 20th, 2008

Bob Dinges, a retired Haverhill Police Officer, was recently diagnosed with a severe, debilitating neurological disease called Progressive Multifrocul Leukoencephalopathy (PML) following his lung transplant last May and will require physical therapy and modifications to his home. A fundraiser is being planned to help Bob and Debbie Dinges through this difficult time in their lives. “A Night for Bob Dinges” is being held on Friday, June 20th at the Amvets Hall, located at 576 Primrose Street in Haverhill, from 7pm - Midnight. Tickets cost $25.00 per person and are available at the door. There will be food, dancing with music by DJ Ed Magee, a silent auction, 50/50 raffles, and door prizes. Lakeview Jr. High School PTO Golf Tournament Fundraiser

The Lakeview Jr. High School PTO is a group of involved parents and teachers who help with various fundraising efforts throughout the year to benefit our students. All proceeds raised will go directly back to the students of the Lakeview Jr. High School through safe, fun-filled activities and school related events and programs. Somers Athletic Fund

Raising two teenaged children is not an easy task. Raising them as a widowed single father is even harder. John Somers has been doing just that, but the burden of trying to provide the best for his children gets harder and harder with the rising costs of both of his children’s athletic programs. His daughter is a two-time State Individual Gymnastics Champion and attends East Elite Cheerleading. His son is currently a Medford High School football player and trying out for baseball. John’s daughter has been contacted by four major college cheerleading schools and gymnastics and all John wishes is that he will be able to keep her enrolled in East Elite so her dreams can become a reality. Unified Sports Program

Sports are a big part of most our lives. We enjoy watching a game and many of us also enjoy participating in sports. However, some of us have physical disabilities and often get left out of the playing part of sports. The YMCA of Greater Westfield is combating this unfortunate reality through their Unified Sports Program. This program encourages kids between the ages of 6 and 12 of all skill and ability levels to come out and play together. The YMCA of Greater Westfield will hosting activities for kids 6-12 including baseball, frisbee golf, flag football, and more beginning this spring. There is no charge for the young athletes to participate; they need only to be joined by a parent or high school age sibling. Sign ups for these events will occur during the final week of the preceding event and are filled on a first come, first serve basis.
